Lodging & recreation in the North East Kingdom (NEK), VT:
If you're a water & mountain person, the Lake Willoughby area in Westmore is ideal. Its long (probably the biggest lake in the region), with spectacular cliffs overlooking it. The friendly & luxurious Willoughvale Inn is on the northern shore. Some of the rooms have spectacular views - try the Weathervane room for both mountain & lake with cliff views. The staff is friendly & extremely helpful. They have both cottages as well as rooms in the main inn. The rooms are very well appointed, and well worth the money. Mt. Burke is about a 25min drive from there, where you can hike, snoeshow & ski. Newport is about 45mins away (dependng on if you take the back roads or the highway). Overall a great place, romantic too if that's what you're looking for.
Another nice area is around Caspian Lake in Greensboro. It is smaller, and no personal water crafts are allowed, but the surrounding hilly region is extremely calming for the senses. The farmland views are really nice. An excellent inn is the Lakeview Inn. It is not on the water like the Willoughvale Inn in Westmore, but the lake is only a 7min walk, and you may be able to use their private beach. They inn keepers are extremely helpful & friendly. The rooms are luxurious. They have a restaurant onsite, although it doesn't cater to folks who're looking for deli sandwiches - you can take in the sunset while having dinner or watch the meadows. Breakfast is generally included with the room rates, and is quite an affair - you can get spoilt in a jiffy. Hike around (the inn keepers will help you find appropriate hikes), drive to Morrisville (40 mins away) for a soaring experience with friendly glider pilots (who can make your soaring experience as much "fun" as you want it to be), or just relax in the comfy chairs on the lawn watching the sky & meadows & hill. Stowe is another 15mins from there - you can always do the tallest peak in VT - Mt. Mansfield experience with a gondola ride or a drive to the top, even hike down the mountain maybe. Stowe is apparently a charming small town, but the main road in town can become crowded quite fast, so just take it slow.

Other things to do:
Montreal & Quebec cities are about 2.5hrs away. Goto Quebec first, then Montreal. Montreal has all that Quebec has to offer, except perhaps the nearby Montmorrency Falls. But as cities, Montreal is a much more attractive option. Although, if you're going to the NEK to relax & unwind, I don't see why you would like to spoil the experience by going to a city, but the options exist.
